Choosing a Word of the Year instead of making New Years resolutions is something I’ve done for the last 10 years. Apparently it takes people an average of 32 days to break their resolutions (and mine were often forgotten long before that!) For me, resolutions were restrictive and prescriptive, usually depriving myself of something or telling myself how I used to be was ‘wrong’.

A Word of the Year (WOTY) to me is about awareness, keeping your eyes open to where you can apply your word in your life, every day. Which is why having a journal where you can keep all your thoughts, process emotions, track your progress and reflect makes such sense. Write only about areas of your life related to your Word, keep a memory keeping diary or write morning pages. The journal is yours to use as you wish. Your journal is anther little reminder of your word. Your word that inspires you, lifts you up, makes you feel brave, determined, proud or reminds you what you really want to focus on. Gently guiding you towards what really matters to you.
