Choosing a Word of the Year instead of making New Years resolutions is something I’ve done for the last 10 years. Apparently it takes people an average of 32 days to break their resolutions (and mine were often forgotten long before that!) For me, resolutions were restrictive and prescriptive, usually depriving myself of something or telling myself how I used to be was ‘wrong’.

A Word of the Year (WOTY) to me is about awareness, keeping your eyes open to where you can apply your word in your life, every day. Which is why having it as visible as possible makes such sense. Every time you reach for your keys, grab the wristlet out of your bag or someone comments on it, there’s a little reminder of your word.
