How to choose your Word of the Year (WOTY)

First of all, what is WOTY?

For the last 10 years I’ve chosen a WOTY instead of setting New Years resolution. This isn’t my idea, it was started by a scrapbook designer called Ali Edwards, (which is how I got into it).

It apparently takes people an average of 32 days to break their resolutions (and mine were often forgotten long before that!) For me, resolutions were restrictive and prescriptive, usually depriving myself of something or telling myself how I used to be was ‘wrong’.

A WOTY to me is much more positive. It’s about awareness, keeping your eyes open to where you can apply your Word in your life, every day. (Which is why having your Word printed on an item you use all year makes so much sense so you’re reminded of your intention throughout the year). You choose a Word that inspires you, lifts you up, makes you feel brave, determined, proud or reminds you what you really want to focus on. Gently guiding you towards what really matters and building a life you love.

How to choose a Word of the Year (WOTY):

For me I want a Word that works for both my personal and professional life. Some people have a  specific goal in mind or an idea of how they want to feel or how they want to live their life and choose a Word that supports that.

Very often a Word will make itself known to me and keeping popping up, like it needs my attention!

If a Word isn’t jumping out at you, use these ideas:

• Think about your values. What’s most important to you?

• What you want to achieve this year?

• What Word feels like it could support you in changes you want to make?

• Write a list of 20 Words. Anything that comes into your head, don’t overthink it. I’m sure you’ll feel drawn to one of them.

When you think you’ve chosen your Word, keep it in your mind for a few days before you finally commit. Think about it often and how you could apply it in different areas of your life. You’ll soon discover if it feels right for you.
